Special Olympics comes to Raleigh Special Olympics North Carolina needs nearly 1,000 volunteers for the 2002 SONC Summer Games, which will be held in Raleigh May 31-June 2. According to Keith L. Fishburne, president of SONC, more than 1,600 Special Olympics athletes representing more than 80 counties across North Carolina will complete in this year's events. Volunteers--individuals and groups--are needed to fill positions ranging from scorekeepers and timers to meal distribution assistants and announcers. Olympics North Carolina Athletes, Celebrity Recipes Special Olympics North Carolina has published a cookbook featuring celebrity recipes, and stories and facts highlighting Special Olympics athletes, their families and volunteers from across the state. A Pinch of Gold: Winning Recipes Inspired by the Athletes of Special Olympics North Carolina, will be available May 1, with proceeds benefiting Special Olympics local programs statewide, according to Keith L. Fishburne, president of Special Olympics North Carolina. A Pinch of Gold, priced at $19.95, is available by contacting participating local Special Olympics programs, or 800-843-6276. The book is a collection of more than 300 recipes, contributed by Special Olympics North Carolina athletes and their families. Celebrity contributors include golfing legend Arnold Palmer, the voice of the Tar Heels Woody Durham, the Carolina Hurricanes' Glen Wesley, the Courage's Carla Overbeck, and Governor Mike Easley. "This cookbook captures the heart of Special Olympics, providing facts about the Special Olympics movement, dispelling stereotypes and promoting acceptance of people with mental retardation," says Keith L. Fishburne, president of Special Olympics North Carolina.
The 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games are in Dublin, Ireland! During the Games in June 2003, more than 7,000 athletes from 160 delegations, along with 3,000 coaches, 28,000 family members and supporters and 2,000 members of the media will be in Ireland to compete and to celebrate the achievements of people with learning disabilities. The 2003 Special Olympics World Games has launched the country's largest ever volunteer appeal and asked for 30,000 people to work at next year's World Games.
