To answer the question we all asked upon the birth of our child: Yes. . . Life as you know it is over. As with any major life change, you are set irrevocably upon a new course now that you have a new baby. Add the fact that your precious child has Down Syndrome, and you will learn that you are embarking on a privileged journey of enlightenment and inspiration.

We were blessed with Alyssa’s arrival into our lives ten years ago. There is so much we could tell you, but we have chosen to share with you the most important lesson we have learned. Alyssa is a child created purposefully by God to carry out His plan in this world. He did not make a mistake in creating her. He can and will use her life for good. There is hope and joy in this child’s existence.

Focusing upon this lesson has freed us to dream BIG for Alyssa’s future. You may be mourning the loss of the dream of the "ideal" child. You may be focusing on limitations. We’re here to tell you that so much is possible. Educate yourself by reading about and meeting people with Down Syndrome. Trust that you are the expert on your child. Build a new vision in the rubble of your old dreams. Focus on your vision and do not waver from it as you make decisions over the years. Your child can use the unique gifts given to him or her by God. Your child can participate in our community in a meaningful way. Your child is a terrific person!

Alyssa continues to be an inspiration to us. We don’t know if we will ever fully appreciate her challenges. We are, however, now more fully aware of what qualities are truly important. Honesty. Discipline. Perseverance. Faith. Courage. Integrity. These are the essence of good character and what we nurture in Alyssa.

No . . . Life will never be the same again. It will be immeasurably better.
