Megan May 1998 -Megan loves ice cream, grilled cheese sandwiches, playing with her brother and sister and watching Arthur on t.v. She crawled up the steps today (with a little help) for the first time and was very proud of herself. She enjoys music, especially when she can sit at the piano and play her own songs, singing with the music. Megan is 2 years old and has Down syndrome. She was born 7 weeks premature and spent her first 5 weeks of life in the hospital until she weighed more than 4 pounds. She was born with a congenital heart defect which needed to be repaired when she was 3 months old because of increased difficulty breathing. Her first 4 months of life were a period of struggle but she never stopped fighting. Once her surgery was complete, she has been very healthy and happy. Megan started wearing glasses about 6 months ago which has made a tremendous difference in her fine and gross motor skills - life is easier when you can see where you are going and what you are doing! Megan has a tremendous sense of humor and finds the antics of her 5-year-old
brother to be a constant source of entertainment. We introduced books into
both our children's lives early - with Megan we read the Adventures of Winnie
the Pooh while she was in the hospital. Now, Megan searches out books to
read and will read stories out loud like she has seen the rest of us do.
She enjoys going outside and has started going to get someone's shoes when she
wants to tell you that it is time to go out and play. Megan is a wonderful child and we feel so lucky to have her as our daughter. She continues to learn and move forward. Just when I might be getting frustrated at what seems like a lack of progress developmentally, Megan will suddenly start doing all sorts of things that she showed no indication of doing the day before. It is almost like she practices these things secretly in her crib at night in order to surprise mom and dad in the morning. We are expecting our third child in a few months and I am excited that Megan will get the opportunity to be the middle child. She can continue to grow and learn as she tries to be like her brother, Jeffrey, and now has someone that can learn from her. Congratulations on your own special child. They will brighten up your world. Jan 1999 - Megan is now almost 3 years old. The amount of change in the last 9 months is unbelievable. The most exciting thing is her use of language. Megan's vocabulary has grown by leaps and bounds. The dearest thing to me, when she realizes that I have left the room, is when she calls "Mom" and then will come look for me. There once was a time when I could count on her being right where I left her. Now, Megan is into everything, climbing everywhere. I call her my little hurricane. She is inquisitive and knows what she wants.
Megan has jumped right into the role of being big sister to her baby sister born six months ago. She brings her toys and helps burp the baby. Megan has also started a 2 day a week preschool program. She enjoys being with her friends and playing with glue and paint and other messy craft items. Children are all about growth and change and fun and hugs. Megan is no exception. She has brought us a lot of joy and love. Jan 2000 - Megan is all about change. She started using a walker 2 months and is now Miss Independent. She loves to walk around, stopping to chat with whoever she sees. You can see how proud she is of herself by looking at the smile on her face. With the walker, Megan can now keep up with her typically developing sister who walked before she was 1. Patty Buddy walk October 200!!
