Megan C. Like most parents of a new baby
with Down syndrome, we were quickly overwhelmed with more questions than
answers. How, What and Why ran rampant in our household for the first several
weeks. We found ourselves seeking much information in a short period of time. We
had hopes of somehow proving science wrong and developing Megan along a
"normal" schedule of walking and talking and all of the other
developmental milestones. We set goals expecting that with hard work and by
doing the "right things" we would reach them. We also expected that if
we were unable to reach our goals we would be very disappointed.
Today Megan is 23 months old. Scientific facts have proven to be more powerful than perseverance and Megan has not progressed as we originally hoped. The odd thing though, is that is doesn’t seem to matter now that we’re here. Our perspective on life did need to be adjusted and we have learned a valuable lesson that we call "Be Here Now". We have no way of living in the past or in the future. All we can control is our actions in the here and now. It doesn’t matter how she compares to other children her age. Megan is making progress at her pace and her age doesn’t matter. What matters to us is that she is happy and healthy and that she has everything she needs to reach her full potential in the years to come. We have learned to be grateful for each day and enjoy Megan as she is. Don’t misunderstand, we still have extremely high hopes and expectations for Megan. We still set goals but they are much more realistic. Life is a journey and you can only achieve personal success through a series of daily victories. We still achieve these daily victories, and in the long run it may just take a little longer or require much more effort on our part and hers to get where we want to go. Megan lights up our lives each and every day. Her cheerful laugh, mischievous grin and adorable squeal help us enjoy the glories of daily life. Her stubborn side shows us she is becoming a 2 year old and her imitations of her big sister shows us she will have a flare for humor.
So many times it is said that children grow up too fast and we have found this to be true for all of our children. We have stopped wishing for Megan to grow up faster and have found it enjoyable to "Be Here Now"!
